Don't Just Make a Living. Make a Life.

Sit & Sip Journal No. 1

If you're reading this, welcome.

We've been thinking a lot lately about why we wanted to start Sit & Sip. On the surface, it probably looks like it's about drinks. Chai recipes. Café recommendations. Things to sip while you read. And don't get us wrong—we love all of those things.

But the drink was never really the point.

To us, a cup of chai has always been an excuse to pause. To sit down for a little while. To catch up with someone you love. To journal. To think. To just... be.

We think that's something we've quietly forgotten how to do.

It feels like the world is always asking us what's next.

What's your job? Where did you get hired? How much are you making? What's your next goal? What's your five-year plan?

None of those are bad questions. In fact, we ask ourselves a lot of them too.

We're ambitious. We love building things. We love setting goals. We love dreaming about what's possible. We don't think ambition is something we should apologize for.

But lately we've been wondering if we've accidentally made achievement the only thing that matters.

We celebrate promotions, degrees, salaries, and milestones—and we should. Those are incredible accomplishments.

But somewhere along the way, we think many of us started believing that life begins after the next achievement.

"Once I graduate..."

"Once I get the job..."

"Once I make a little more money..."

"Once things slow down..."

The problem is... there's always another "once."

And while we're chasing the next thing, life keeps happening around us.

We've been thinking about something Pitbull once said (yes, Pitbull).

"Every day above ground is a great day."

It's such a simple sentence, but we keep coming back to it.

Because it's true.

We only get one life.

None of us knows exactly how much time we have here.

One day, we don't think we'll remember every promotion or every grade we got in school. We probably won't remember how many emails we answered or how productive we were on a random Tuesday.

We'll remember the people we loved.

The trips that made us feel alive.

The conversations that changed us.

The meals we shared around a table.

The sunsets we stopped to watch.

The smell after it rains.

The quiet moments we almost rushed past.

That's the life we want to remember.

And that's the philosophy behind Sayali.

Don't just make a living. Make a life.

That doesn't mean stop being ambitious.

It doesn't mean quit your job, move to Bali, and drink chai all day.

That's not what we're saying.

We want to build meaningful careers. We want to work hard. We want to create something we're proud of. We hope you chase your dreams too.

But we also hope we don't rush through the only life we get while we're doing it.

Because we don't think slowing down is the opposite of productivity.

We think it's the opposite of mindlessness.

There's a difference.

You can rush through cooking dinner because it's just another thing on your to-do list.

Or you can enjoy the process of making something with care.

You can fly through your work just trying to get it done.

Or you can slow down enough to take pride in what you're creating.

You can drink your morning chai while answering emails and barely notice it.

Or you can actually taste it.

You can spend an hour scrolling on your phone and call it "relaxing."

Or you can go for a walk, leave your phone in your pocket, watch the sunset, listen to the birds, and remember what the world sounds like.

The difference isn't whether you're being productive.

The difference is whether you're present.

We think presence is something we've been missing.

We've gotten so used to documenting our lives that we sometimes forget to actually live them.

We photograph the sunset before we watch it.

We eat while scrolling.

We have conversations while half-listening because we're already thinking about what we need to do next.

We're everywhere except where we actually are.

Maybe slowing down is just choosing to come back.

To this moment.

To this conversation.

To the warm mug in your hands.

To the people sitting across from you.

To the life that's happening right now.

That's what we hope Sit & Sip becomes.

Not another corner of the internet telling you to hustle harder.

Not another productivity guide.

Just a place that gently reminds us to notice our lives while we're living them.

So this week, here's our invitation.

Leave your phone inside when you go for a walk.

Take your time making your morning chai or coffee.

Notice the sunset instead of just taking a picture of it.

Call someone you've been meaning to catch up with.

Sit outside for a few minutes without feeling like you need to be doing something.

Just be.

After all, we're all trying to make a living.

Let's not forget to make a life too.

Until next time,

With love,
Shobha & Srinithi
